Knitwits Yarns knitwitspenzance.co.uk
For those of you who've been wondering about the knitted Seagull, the story can now be revealed. Monday is St Piran's Day in Cornwall - St Piran is the patron saint of tin miners and is now considered to be the patron saint of Cornwall. For this day the banners fly and local school children parade around the town and we, as shop owners, are asked to decorate our shop windows in suitable attire. This year we/I decided to pull out all the stops and, so, we have a knitted Cornish Teddy Bear's Picnic and it's in the window now and until this time next week:
complete with Oscar Bear:
our Cornish Organic Tea Cosy:
our Cornish Organic Entrelac Blanket for everyone to sit on:
our Keep Calm and Carry On Knitting Mugs:
and - to eat - Cornish pasties:
Scones (with jam and clotted cream):
cup cakes:
and strawberry tarts topped off with Cornish clotted cream:
and - of course - in Cornwall you can't have a tea party without a seagull eyeing you up, ready to pounce:
Lowen dydh sen Pyran! (Happy St Piran's Day!)

Do you have a pattern for your knit pasty? I am the curator at a Cornish-American immigration historic site in Wisconsin, USA, and would love to find someone here who could use your pattern to knit some pasties for us to use for fundraising purposes. We are a not-for-profit organization, so we are always in search of fundraising opportunities, and it is wonderful when we can find something that relates to our site's themes!
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous - yes, the Cornish Pasty pattern came from Susie Johns book "Knitted Fast Food" - readily available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Knitted-Fast-Food-Twenty-Make/dp/1844485382. Happy Kntting! Julia
