Day 1 - John O'Groats -> Dornoch

We had an impossibly slow internet connection last night in Dornoch so I'm writing this on the side of the A9 on Monday morning.

Yesterday dawned grey and damp in JOG (I think the Scots describe is as "dreech" or something like that - Marvin will correct me if I'm wrong) - not the kind of weather we'd hoped for but, hey ho, nothing could be done about that so we ate the full Scottish breakfast (we'd spent the night in the Seaview Hotel, not the van - last night/first night treat, which ever way you want to look at it). Then we motored down to the start - which isn't the most salubrious spot in the world, it has to be said!

Whilst the boys fiddled with bits of bikes, tyres, water bottles etc, I cast on:

and then we set off to the official start line:

check out the truly hideous building in the background! Come on Tourism Scotland (or whomever) - surely you can do better than that! Then the knitting had to have its official photograph taken:

(the alert amongst you will note the Cornish colours of black and gold)
and then there was me:

and then we headed to the signpost but it was too early and no-one was there to put the signs up! Can only assume they don't leave them up as they'd be nicked (you can just make out the Orkneys in the background):

and then they were off and I sat and did some knitting and then sorted out the van and had to turn the fridge off gas and on to engine battery. We weren't sure how effective the gas fridge would be but I discovered that it's actually very effective indeed. So effective that, if you leave 4 cans of coke in the freezer department overnight this happens:

Yes, that is Coke cans quite literally exploded. So, whilst I sorted out that little mess the sun had, amazingly, come out (definitely not in the forecast) and the boys were cycling on:

This was taken by FB on the move!

T in motion!

There was one particularly hideous hill which we'd noted the day before so we agreed to meet at the top of it. The poor old camper even struggled to the top and this is what FB looked like as he came in:

To be honest, FB didn't really want that photo included but I said it's important for people to realise just how difficult this really is. If we only have photos of happy, smiling cyclists bombing along, everyone will think it's a doddle - which it isn't!

So far we've met two other sets of people doing it - a bunch of 8 lads from Lymington Rowing Club who I met at the top of that nasty hill and a couple on a tandem who are either "The Blonde and the Blind" or "The Blind and the Blonde" - we can't remember which but you can check them out on-line too as they're doing a daily blog as well and were on Radio 4 recently. The guy on the back of the tandem is blind and the girl/lady on the front is the blonde - they're raising money for blind children. All the men in our party declared her to be fit and hot - I have no idea what that means.

After lunch and that hideous hill, things deteriorated horribly as the wind suddenly blew up. I don't know how strong it was but it was certainly gusting up to 100mph. I met the boys on a bridge and they were, literally, crawling along on their hands and knees as they were terrified they were going to get blown off. Poor T did get blown right over at one point (as G kindly put it - he kissed the tarmac!) and was really quite shaken as he didn't even have time to un-cleat but was vertical one moment and horizontal the next. He's OK but it was very, very hairy and everyone was praying that the wind died down for today - which it has.

The scenery was glorious though:

We spent the night in Dornoch, which is a very pretty town right by the beach and the lovely campsite owners deducted £5.00 off the price when they realised who we are cycling for. Too windy for a bbq so we cooked in the van which was very, very cosy. Not sure how 6 people in here would manage!

On the knitting front, I've now finished the first ball of wool! I had my usual panic of whether I was going to run out of wool or not but one ball knitted about 12" and the front/back of the sweater is about double that so I reckon I should be using 8 balls and I have 10 - panic over. Today I start the slow, coloured and moss stitch bit - oh dear.

Today we're heading for Loch Ness and will be keeping a constant eye out for monsters.

The Lake District -> John O'Groats

Knitwits Yarns knitwitspenzance.co.uk

Greetings from John O'Groats - and that's not a sentence I thought I'd ever type in my knitting blog!

We've now formatted some photos so here's the rather over-loaded car from yesterday:

The journey up today was long, long, long. If you think the Lake District is north then, trust me, you haven't even started! Due to the website problems, neither FB or I slept very well so he drove the first bit and I dozed and then we swopped over.

From Inverness on we were driving the road that they will be cycling in over the next 2 days. Up until now we'd avoided this but the last bit couldn't be helped. Tonight at dinner I think the scale of the challenge isn't being underestimated by anyone. There are some mammoth hills tomorrow and some lovely downhill runs as well! At one point we, literally, drove up into the mist and T's only comment was "we're, literally, cycling into the clouds" - there may have been one or two expletives added as well but I'll let your imagination fill in the gaps!

Our borrowed sat nav (thanks Adrian and Mads - it's been brilliant already) came up with "Arriving at John O'Groats" and, lo, we were here.

I think the pongle is struggling tonight and loading photos is proving to be problematic (and v v slow) so we'll try again tomorrow. We all need a really good night's sleep tonight and if I ask for photos to be re-formatted now (10.10pm) tempers might become a little fraught!!

We've just enjoyed a lovely supper of local steak (boys x 3) and chicken stuffed with haggis (me). Up early tomorrow to sort the bikes, cast on the jumper and start the journey home. We're all very excited and very nervous at the same time.

PS: With regards to the website(s) - Cornish Organic was also affected. Transpires that our website hoster was hacked into and about 100 sites were affected (including both of ours). The sites should now be working OK and orders can be accepted and fulfilled but the stock levels may be slightly out and the news page is out of date. Our website designer (Thomas) has assured me that both sites are totally safe and that any card information etc is secure. I'll endeavour to put the news page right tomorrow (without pictures - I don't have them with me) and Tracey will work through the stock pages. Any problems please, please, just call the shop on (01736) 367069 and we'll help out manually. As our website designer said; "it's a constant game of cat and mouse between the website hosts and the hackers" - my language to describe them was somewhat more fruity!

Penzance -> The Lake District

One day late with this blog and it's only Day 1! We left Penzance in good time - you could hardly see the boys in the back of the car but they coped. Picked up the campervan in Plymouth and set off north. And, oh boy, what a hideous journey. The M5/M6 junction - need I say more?!

And to cap it all, the further north we got, the worse the weather got until we reached the Lakes and it was thick mist and drizzle. We should really have expected it though as the hosepipe ban started in the Lakes on Thursday and, according to my parents, it's rained pretty much solidly every since! We did manage a Pimms but it was inside and not on the terrace, sadly.

The big news of the day was that we think the boys were mentioned on both Dale Winton's and Simon Mayo's shows on Radio 2 yesterday afternoon. I say "think" because the radio reception in the van gave up both times and all we heard was "Hopson family" and then "17 and 15 respectively" and "Help for Heroes" and both times it died out! Have been trying to find it on the listen again service but have failed so far.

Then we tried to get on the site late last night to find a very weird message from a hacker. Slight panic (to put it mildly) but have spoken to a computer whizz friend this morning (thanks Steve - Apple Crumble in Penzance) and he thinks our web-site hosting company has been hacked in to. They are obviously aware of the situation as the weird message has now gone but the news page is very out of date and you can't place orders at the moment. If you would like to order anything, please phone the shop on (01736) 367069. The timing of this is unbelievable (I haven't been away for over a year and now it happens!) but please bear with us and the hosting company and our web-site designer should be able to sort it out in the not too distant future. As ever, legitimate companies trying to run a business get hit.

Am writing this in a supermarket car park in Kendal, in the rain and we're now heading further north to John O'Groats - more rain expected apparently, deep joy.

D-Day Minus 1

Knitwits Yarns knitwitspenzance.co.uk

So the house is now in total chaos. I have bits of bikes all over the place - I found 3 spare tyres in the sitting room yesterday. There are bits that I don't even recognise, let alone have any idea what they do. I am seriously hoping that we have enough puncture repair kits because I'm praying we don't have that many punctures.

The knitting box is packed - wool (with extra balls), needles (with spares in case of breakages), pattern (plus spare copy), tape measure, pins, bodkins, scissors, stitch holders. Have I forgotten anything? I knitted a tension square and was glad I did as I've had to go down to a 4.5mm needle to get the tension (nearly) right - can't decide if it's the wool, my knitting or the tension (ha, ha) is getting to me.

The thing that I still can't get over is the chargers - we are taking 8 different chargers with us:
2 for still cameras (1 small for FB to carry, 1 big for me in the van);
1 for the video camera;
1 for the laptop;
4 for 4 different phones (the boys need theirs to text their mates).
possibly 1 more for T's PSP if he can find it (the charger that is, not the PSP).

Is this what the 21st century is all about? Wonderful technology but supplied by different appliances for everything and endless miles of cables. What did the Victorians do when they went on the "grand tour"? I guess they took paint and paper with them and painted the views and wrote letters. Somehow, I can't help feeling that it sounds a whole lot simpler!

This time tomorrow we'll still be en route to my parents in the Lake District. If the pink dongle (perhaps we'll re-christen it the "pongle") decides to play and we get the chance, we'll update with pics of the camper and the glorious Lakeland views. I understand there is Pimms waiting for us, though, so uploading pics may not be the top priority!

D Day Minus 3

Knitwits Yarns knitwitspenzance.co.uk

FB and T went for a 22 mile blast this morning, averaging nearly 15mph apparently. These sorts of numbers are very important for the boys - I cycle home each evening and admire the scenery - clearly I don't have enough competitive bones in my body.

I wound off 10 skeins of gold Aran weight wool. Got in a bit of a tangle and swore quite a lot but got there in the end. Gold is required for the End to End Sweater.

The biggest news though is that the knitting pattern has arrived! This is a relief! I shall be good and knit a tension square tonight. I'm pretty sure that's not cheating. I really don't want to be faffing around with squares at John O'Groats and don't want to be carting loads of different needles with me so I think prior preparation and planning is allowed. I made up the challenge so I'll make up the rules - OK?

Thank you Tina! Apparently, there's not much shaping but there is moss stitch (for non-knitters amongst you, moss stitch is slow) - maybe there'll only be moss stitch on the front? As I said, I'll make up the rules - OK?

D Day Minus 4

Knitwits Yarns knitwitspenzance.co.uk

We leave for JoG on Friday so you'd have thought the house would be in chaos and we'd be running around like loons. In fact, G is away for 3 days for a seminar at the University he's hoping to go to so T has taken over his potato duties. Which left FB and I to do technical, computery-type things alone with no ICT GCSE computer nerds to assist. (And also means that Wednesday and Thursday will be pure, unmitigated hell.)

Anyone who reads this regularly will know that I don't do anything technical. I have a (pink) mobile phone which makes and receives calls and texts and, apparently, has some games on it (but I've never found them). I have a small digital camera which I can point and fire but I have no idea how to down/uploads the photos from it and I have a laptop which is programmed to do what I want it to do.

Today we went to get a dongle. The lady in T Mobile was very, very patient - recognising, immediately, a (nearly) middle aged couple with not a clue between them. The words she said all, individually were English but all of them joined in a row to make a sentence made absolutely no sense to either of us. How does this happen? Give me a row of k1, p1, sl1, psso or p2, C4B, p2 and I'm your woman (that's knitting-speak for any non-knitters reading this). But get me into a phone or computer shop and I glaze over and lose the will to live. Fortunately (as I've said) she was remarkably patient and we'd taken the borrowed laptop in with us so we made her plug it in and check it all worked before we left. Apparently, it'll work now for 30 days and then we have to do something to make it work after that but I have no idea what. Something to do with texting a number - who knows.

Crucially, it works and - more importantly - my brand new dongle is pink and, therefore, matches my phone.

D-Day minus 8

Knitwits Yarns knitwitspenzance.co.uk

We leave for our epic cycling/knitting adventure a week tomorrow and, suddenly, there's loads to do, emails are flying around, FB's frantically dyeing wool for customers and it's all getting a bit crazy!

We're in the local paper today under a wonderful headline: "Are They Knits?" - brilliant!

All my boys are off to the gym tonight for a bit of a session so I can "train" in front of the telly in peace and quiet - bliss.

The weather has turned in Cornwall today and the rain has come - much needed so mustn't complain - I only hope that G is sorting potatoes in a shed and not outside. Am also praying that it gets it over and done with so the sun comes out when we/they're cycling. Lots of lovely visitors have been in today because of the weather - it's always great to meet people from all over the world, all with a common passion!
